We recently lost our best girl, Sasha, after a short battle with lymphoma. Sasha was a regular at Xpress Sweeping. She came to work with us every day. She split her time between the garage, hanging out with the crews as they worked on the trucks; and the office, where she greeted all of our customers when they came in.

When we added our younger dog Hazel to the family, Sasha taught her the ropes and transfered her calm nature to Hazel.

We will miss you, Sasha!

Don't let small cracks cause big problems

Fatigue cracking is also known as ‘alligator’ or ‘crocodile’ cracking, and it is one of the most common ways that asphalt pavement can break down over time. The cracking patterns caused are extremely distinctive and resemble the scales on a reptile's back, hence the amphibian reference in the name.

Alligator cracking is also one of the more serious problems that an asphalt surface can develop, and it will only get worse over time if not addressed.

Unlike surface-level asphalt damage, alligator cracking is almost always caused by problems beneath the asphalt in the underlying layers, which are supposed to support the asphalt. When the pavement is carrying burdens that the supporting structure can't hold up, like heavy trucks or machinery, alligator cracking occurs.

While a small crack in a paved surface may not look dangerous, it is the sign of a potentially huge problem. Though small, when the freezing rain and snow hits, water will make its way into the crack and freeze, causing a much bigger issue to brew. Soon that tiny crack will become a much larger gap, or a chunk of broken-off asphalt.

Sweeping the Sand Away

Now that the winter is finally over, our crews have been hard at work at our commercial clients' properties around the state cleaning up the last of the sand and debris. We know how important it is to present a clean, welcoming property to your customers, employees and visitors and we work around the clock to make it happen without disrupting your day-to-day business operations.

The first step to winter cleanup is eliminating the salt and sand left by plows throughout the winter. To do that, we use our sweeping and vacuuming trucks, along with a crew of dedicated and careful employees who use gas powered blowers to assist the larger machines.

Next we come through and inspect the property for damage such as potholes, cracks in the surfaces, or missing/damaged barriers. We also assess the landscaping. The end result is a welcoming commercial property ready for a busy Spring and Summer season!

We are preparing our sweeper and vacuum trucks for a busy cleanup season. After a long snowy winter, lots of salt, sand and debris still remains on paved areas all over the state, and we are looking forward to beautifying our customers' properties again.

One major concern going into the warmer weather is for the safety of vehicles on sandy surfaces, especially motorcycles. A motorcycle can easily slip going around a corner on a sandy surface. We take great care to clean, as if our own family members could be riding their motorcycles on the roads we are sweeping.

Another important reason for springtime cleaning is to clear gutters of all of the debris from the winter. That way, the surrounding areas will be less prone to flooding during springtime storms, and water runoff will drain normally.

October is always a busy month for us with the ending of Summer and beginning of Fall. Here at Xpress Sweeping, we were out working all across Rhode Island and the surrounding areas, helping our customers prepare for the cold weather and vacuuming the already falling leaves.

The images above are from a fencing replacement job, something we do quite often; and also two landscaping jobs requiring our larger dump trucks.

Fall is Fast Approaching

Pumpkin flavored everything is back, which is a sure sign that Fall is almost here. We've also noticed the leaves starting to fall already, and have begun preparing our extensive fleet of vacuum and sweeper trucks for a busy season.

So why is it important to clear dead leaves off your paved surfaces?

Leaves quickly clog gutters

New England Fall weather can include a lot of rain, so the last thing you want is to have clogged gutters. When clogged, gutters can't properly drain water from paved surfaces, causing flooding. Keep roadways clear of leaves and other debris so that flooding is minimal or non-existent, even during heavy rains.

Leaves become slippery when wet, posing a risk for pedestrians, bikers and motorcyclists

There are already enough hazards that pedestrians, bikers and motorcyclists have to deal with. Don't add wet, slippery leaves to the mix. Especially if you have, as an example, a shopping center up on a hill and the roadways are curvy or hilly, pay special attention to leaves building up. Your customers will thank you!

July was a busy month for the Xpress Sweeping crew. One of our biggest jobs was this major clean up project at the Lowe's Distribution Center just over the line in CT. Not only did we sweep and vacuum their paved surfaces with our trucks, but our crews shoveled, swept and perfected the common areas around the buildings. The space started out looking sandy and unkept and ended up looking clean and ready for anything!

Winter Damage to Paved Surfaces

Each spring, our customers' paved areas reveal what a winter's worth of salt, plowing, snow and ice has done to the surface. It's important to understand how these all can affect your paved surfaces:

ICE

Melting, freezing, melting and re-freezing: this is what ice does all winter long, and the constant expanding and contracting slowly weakens paved surfaces. Select types of ashpalt are actually engineered to withstand constant freezing and thawing tempertures and we highly recomment using those here in New England.

SNOW PLOWS

All winter long, plows make sure that paved surfaces are safe to drive and walk on, but this comes at a price to the surfact. The constant scraping really decreases the life expectancy of paved surfaces. Our plow operators set the plow blades just high enough to avoid damaging the surface as much as possible, but still clear off ice and snow. Many municipcal plows do the same. Each Spring we do recommend coming out to do a free estimate on any repairs your paved surface may need, which may be as simple as a seal coating, or could require major patching and repairs.

MELTING SNOW

Have you ever noticed heat radiating off of a roadway in the summertime? Black surfaces absorb the sun's rays and therefore emit a lot of heat, even in the middle of winter! This helps speed up the melting process, which is of course great news. The bad news, however, is that sometimes this rapid melting causes water to pool on traditional paved surfaces. The use of porous asphalt is beneficial to the environment and more sustainable than non-porous surfaces, and also allows water to naturally drain into the soil and water table instead of pooling on the surface or creating flooding issues on the sides of roads.

Xpress Sweeping: All Geared Up for Spring

Finally after a rather chilly winter, Spring is just around the corner here in Rhode Island, which means our crews are gearing up for some Spring Cleaning.

After months of snowy and icy weather, fine sand and salt lines the streets, sidewalks and properties of our clients. Our crews will be busy sweeping and vaccuming up the debris to reveal the pavement underneath. National Pavement Expo 2017

Henry and Barbara traveled to Nashville, TN to the National Pavement Expo, where the best in the pavement industry gather to exchange ideas, listen to industry experts, and see the newest technology in person.

We had a great time at the Expo and got a chance to see some of the new machinery up close. The black machine pictured actually recycles pavement! The HDE Rap Raptor is used for recycling waste asphalt to "like new" hot mix asphalt. We also looked at new vacuum and sweeper trucks, plus a wide range of other machinery.

We attended discussions and forums lead by industry leaders and brought home a few new ideas to deliver the best service to our customers.

We are already looking forward to attending the Expo in 2018!

I-95 Providence: I-95 South, at Exit 22 (Downtown Providence/Rtes. 6 & 10), exit closed for construction, Monday and Tuesday nights from midnight to 6 a.m. the following day. Follow signed detour.

I-95 Providence: I-95 South, from Exit 23 (Charles St.) to Exit 22 (Downtown Providence/Rtes. 6 & 10), right lane closed for construction, Monday and Tuesday nights from 9 p.m. to midnight.

I-95 Richmond/Exeter: I-95 North and South, from Exit 3 to Exit 5, shoulder closures for drainage work, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

I-95 Exeter/Richmond: Watch for construction vehicles exiting and entering the median area along I-95 South after Exit 5 (Rte. 102) at the Tefft Hill Trail Bridge, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Spring 2017.

I-195 Providence: I-195 East and West, from the I-95 interchange to Exit 2 (EB: India St./Gano St.; WB: South Main St.), left shoulder closure for construction through January 2017.

Rte 6 Rte 10 Providence: Truck traffic is restricted to the right lane from the Westminster St. overpass over Rte. 10 South/Rte. 6 West to the Rte. 6/Rte. 10 interchange, and on Rte. 6 East at the Rte. 6/Rte. 10 interchange.

Metropolitan Providence

Pawtucket: The Barton St. Bridge, between Broad St. and Montgomery St., is currently closed.

Providence: The Pleasant Valley Parkway Bridge that carries Dean St. over the Woonasquatucket River is closed.

Pawtucket: Division St. East over the Division St. Bridge, from Pleasant St. to Water St., is closed with a detour in place for bridge work, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through March 2017. Westbound travel is not restricted. Detour of local traffic via Main St. and School St. Advanced detour using I-95 North at Exit 28 (School St.). Please note: Also as part of this project, pedestrians are limited to use the sidewalk on the south side of the bridge through October 2017.

Cranston: Wellington Ave. North and South under I-95 North and South, alternating one-way traffic for bridge work, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Rte 6 East Providence: Rte. 6 East and West, from Moorland Ave. to Boyd Ave., alternating lane closures for utility work, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

East Providence: Pawtucket Ave. North and South, from Warren Ave. to Waterman Ave., right lane closed for utility work, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Pawtucket: Effective Friday, January 27, Taft St. North and South under the Division St. Bridge, lane shifts for sidewalk work, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Providence: Concord St. North and South, from Bentley Lane to Nashua St., right lane closed for a bridge inspection, Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Rte 44 Providence: Rte. 44 (Smith St.) East, from Gaspee St. to Canal St., right lane and sidewalk closures for barrier placement through January 2017.

Providence: Elmwood Ave. North and South, from the I-95 underpass to the entrance to Roger Williams Park, has continuous alternating lane closures for construction and bridge work through May 2018.

Newport County

Newport: In order to accommodate construction work at the Newport Transportation and Visitors Center, motorists will experience a right lane closure on America’s Cup Ave., from Gladys Carr Bolhouse Rd. to West Marlborough St., through June 2017. RIPTA has designated temporary bus stop locations along America’s Cup Avenue since the Visitors’ Center boarding area will be closed for the duration of the project. Northern R.I. & Blackstone Valley

Rte 5 North Smithfield: Rte. 5 (Providence Pike), between Main St. and Church St. in Slatersville, there is a single-lane alternating traffic pattern due to bridge condition. Portable traffic signals are in place to direct vehicles over the bridge.

Rte 122 Woonsocket: On Rte. 122 (Hamlet Ave.) at the Hamlet Avenue Bridge over the Blackstone River, temporary lane shifts possible for bridge work through Fall 2017.

South County

138 Richmond: Rte. 138 West, from Canob Lane to Stilson Rd., partial left lane and left shoulder closures for maintenance, Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

West Bay

117 Warwick: Rte. 117 (Centerville Rd.) East, from Meadow St./Burger King to Post Rd. (Apponaug Four Corners), one lane open in each direction for construction, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Rte 5 Warwick: Rte. 5 (Greenwich Ave.), from Post Rd./Centerville Rd. (Apponaug Four Corners) to Veterans Memorial Dr., alternating lane closures for drainage work, Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Delays anticipated.

Rte 2 Warwick: Rte. 2 North, from Rhode Island Mall to the I-295 overpass, left lane closed for bridge work through Summer 2017.

117 Warwick: Rte. 117 (Centerville Rd.), from Meadow St./Burger King to Post Rd. (Apponaug Four Corners), Eastbound and Westbound traffic are now using the Veterans Memorial Dr. Extension. Centerville Rd. is closed to thru traffic from Post Rd. to Meadow St. Please note: access to/from businesses is maintained.

Warwick: A temporary traffic signal has been activated at the Metro Center Blvd. Bridge carrying Metro Center Blvd. over the Airport Connector. With this activation, the detour has been removed. Motorists will now experience one lane of alternating traffic, and possible delays, through Winter 2017.

Warwick: Airport Connector East at the Jefferson Blvd. off-ramp, lanes shifted to the high speed lane, with all exits open. Westbound traffic will continue through the current configuration through Winter 2017.

We are getting ready for a trip to the National Pavement Expo in Nashville, TN, coming up soon during the first week of February.

Most people don't pay much attention to new technology in the pavement industry, but we are excited to see the latest and greatest tech and participate in as many educational seminars as we can. Xpress Sweeping has a long history of excellence and part of our success is due to our commitment to staying at the forefront of new best practices and industry standards. As with any profession, continuing education is invaluable!

The trade show is promising to be an experience to remember, with the industry's leading manufacturers and vendors all having booths and bringing everything from pavement treatments to machinery to software.

Protecting Your Property from Plow Damage

Each year as the weather gets frosty and snow starts flying, plows head out to clear the roadways and parking areas . Plows are anywhere from 7' to 12' wide and move thousands of pounds of snow per minute and in narrow driveways and around tight corners, sometimes it's impossible to know where the edges all are. Landscaping can take a beating and any areas of weakened pavement can develop potholes from scraping.

The good news is that there are several steps you can take to help the plow drivers avoid as many "oops" moments as possible:

1. Mark any landscaping features with brightly colored markers that are at least 4' tall. This will help the plow drivers know where the edges are so they can avoid plowing up past the edge of the hard surface.

2. For edges along paved areas that will be salted, choose salt-tolerant plants. The white oak, black cherry, and pitch pine trees all do very well in a high-salt environment. Smaller plans that also do well include the pasture rose, button bush and several species of blueberry bushes.

3. Use protective coverings like burlap on bushes and other delicate plants. This will protect them from any rogue spray from vehicles that are salting the roads.

4. Grade soil or use drains so that water potentially contaminated with de-icers runs away from grass and landscaping. Try to limit use of de-icers as they are harmful to the environment.

5. Repair any weak areas of pavement or damaged curbs prior to winter . Minor damage can quickly turn ugly with a few cycles of freezing and thawing. Add in the stress that plowing puts on hard surfaces and a small surface crack can develop into a damage-causing pothole quickly.

Pavement Maintenance Tips for All Seasons

Your pavement surfaces withstand the hottest sunny days, the coldest winter blizzards, the constant scraping from plows and sanding on icy days.Take these simple steps to maintain your pavement surfaces, hopefully prevent major repairs, and keep your costs down:

1. Sweep!

Keeping your paved surface clear of sand, debris and dirt will not only make it look nicer, but it will keep it safer for your customers and/or employees. Large amounts of sand and dirt are especially hazardous to motorcycles. A parking lot that is cleaned is also a lot easier to keep an eye on in terms of any damage that is forming on the surface.

2. Fill Cracks

Keep on top of those small spider cracks that pop up as the pavement expands and contracts. Left unattended, these cracks will progress into much worse damage that will eventually require full resurfacing.

Filling the cracks is an inexpensive, fast and easy fix to prolong the life of your pavement.

3. Apply Top Coat Sealing

Did you know that applying a top coat sealing will extend the life of your pavement surfaces by 2-5 years? That's huge! Sealing provides a solid, strong surface that will hold up to nature's constant changing conditions, heavy loads and plowing.

Hazel, Xpress Sweeping's Newest Addition

We are very excited to announce the addition of Hazel to our Xpress Sweeping family! We adopted Hazel from the East Greenwich Animal Protection League.

Featured in the photo are Xpress Sweeping owners Barbara and Henry, our son Connor is holding Hazel, and our sons Austin and Johnathan are kneeling with Sasha. Johnathan’s longtime girlfriend Danielle Whitaker initially saw the litter of 12 puppies up for adoption by the East Greenwich Animal Protection league. These volunteers are awesome! The Foster mom in Warwick has had these beautiful puppies in her home since their birth on July 16, 2016. In addition to the 12 puppies, she owns cats and dogs of her own, has 4 children and ”home schools” her children. I’m sure that’s the reason the puppies are all so wonderful.

Our friend Jim Paolucci who is part ownner of the Cowesett Inn in West Warwick is also a supporter of the EGAPL as well as his own rescue, called the Brandi Project. He called the EGAPL director Tammy with a strong reference on our behalf. Karen Kalunian who also works at EGAPL was our primary point of contact during the adoption process. We visited the puppies on several occasions before we could take Hazel home. Henry chose Hazel because she was completely different from the entire litter.

Hazel has become our second canine in command at Xpress Sweeping, learning the ropes from big sister Sasha. Mostly she sleeps all day. She’s super friendly and very well behaved at the office. Both Sasha and Hazel attend work daily so come in and say hi to our two pups!

Here at Xpress Sweeping, our employees make the business run like a well-oiled machine. None, though, are as smiley and cuddly as Sasha, our dog who comes to work with us every day. Sasha greets customers, supervises the hustle and bustle of the office and garage, does all of the quality control on the maintenance and cleaning of our vehicles, and most of all she is constantly "talking" with all of us and telling us about her day. We feel very lucky that every day is "bring your dog to work day" for us.
